In response to
the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Japan has declared additional
sanctions on Russia. These measures were agreed upon by the Group of Seven (G7)
summit held in Japan last week.
Freezing of
Assets and Ban on Exports:
The Japanese
government, in coordination with other G7 members, will freeze the assets of 78
groups and 17 individuals, including Russian army officers.
Furthermore,
exports to 80 Russian entities, including military-affiliated research labs,
will be banned. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement on Friday
detailing these actions.
Ban on
Construction and Engineering Services:
Japan will also
impose a ban on providing construction and engineering services to Russia.
However, the details
of this decision will be announced later, as said by the Ministry of Trade. The
intention behind this decision is to further restrict support to Russia due to
its actions done in Ukraine.
Condemnation of
Russia's Deployment of Tactical Nuclear Weapons:
Chief Cabinet
Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno, the top government spokesperson in Tokyo, expressed
condemnation towards Russia for deploying tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus.
Matsuno emphasized
that such actions would escalate the already aggravated tensions. Given Japan's
history as the only country to have experienced atomic bombings during wartime,
Matsuno firmly stated that Japan would not accept Russia's nuclear menace or
its potential use. He made these remarks during a regular press conference on
Friday.
G7 Leaders'
Commitment to Ukraine and Additional Sanctions:
During the G7
summit held in Hiroshima, the leaders including France, Germany, the United
Kingdom, and the United States reiterated their commitment to supporting
Ukraine.
They pledged to
provide additional military aid and impose sanctions on Russia. The proposed
restrictions would cover exports of industrial machinery, tools, and technology
that could be utilized by Russia in its war efforts.
Additionally,
efforts will be made to limit Russian revenues from the trade of metals and
diamonds.
