The United State has denied taking side of any political party in the ongoing political turmoil in Pakistan, that erupted especially in the wake of arrest of Imran Khan, an ex-Prime Minister of Pakistan, and a former cricket hero, by Paramilitary Force, known as Pakistan Rangers on the order of National Accountability Bureau (NAB). NAB is an autonomous watchdog that is responsible to investigate corruption in the country.

Vedant Patel, a spokesperson for the US State Department, announced in a press brief that United States it wants a partnership with prosperous and strong Government of Pakistan and does not want to take a side of any political party or an individual.

The details of the Press Brief:

Vedant Patel replied to the question that he can’t guess on the matter about the impacts on Pakistan’s nuclear program in the wake of ongoing crisis regarding safety concerns. He termed the matter as something internal to Pakistan.

When Patel was asked about the violent attacks by the party workers on military entrances and houses inside the city. He replied that we continue to monitor the situation in Pakistan closely, but we don’t have a position on one candidate or party against the other.

The Spokesperson responded to another question regarding suspension of internet services to the public during the time of chaos and violent attack by the angered workers.  He said, internet was also needed for the communication, informed decisions, accountability, and exercise of freedom of expression.

The official also disagreed with the remark that US government is reluctant to take a stand for one among the government of Pakistan and Imran Khan. He commented that we already have clarified that the US government has not any favoured candidate or political party, not only in Pakistan but across the other countries.

He further commented that the safe, strong and prosperous Pakistan is favourable to the interests of United States. This principle remains unchanged.

However, he continued that, we have communicated several times to Pakistan and other countries to adhere to the principles of human right and press freedom.

According to Vedant Patel, the US government is looking forward to boost economic ties with Pakistan particularly in the field of investment and trade.

He also added that there other fields of cooperation like security, renewable energy, addressing the issues of climate change, and increasing agricultural trade etc.

In another questions about Islamabad’s role in Afghanistan, he said, Pakistan is United States’ trade and security partner and continues to be partner in the region.
