G20 Summit 2023 Breakthroughs

G20 Summit 2023 in New Delhi is being held and various breakthroughs are expected. Among them, connectivity projects are in the horizon.

United States, Saudi Arabia, India and European Union are expected to sign major railway and port project.

The Planned Railway and Port Project in G20 Summit:

According to US officials, the planned mega project will connect West Asia with India and Europe. Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will likely be signed in New Delhi during G20 Summit.

The Project shall enable the flow of goods, fuel and data from India across West Asia to Europe. The agreement is the outcome of active engagement of United States with Saudi Arabia.

The report in the WION said, the deal is one of the key initiatives that the United States is trying to push through G20 Summit. It comes in a bid to counter Chinese Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

According to the officials, it’s the outcome of careful and extensive diplomacy at bilateral as well as multilateral level. It is being further added that the agreement will be the most tangible outcome of G20 Summit 2023.

According to Ehtesham Shahid, who is the editor at Emirates Policy Centre, the planned mega infrastructural project is very much significant particularly in terms of relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia which were strained from the past decades and now being restored. According to him, the agreement shall also helpful in sorting out indigenous tussles. This will led the states to leave there vested agendas and to work for national interests and agendas.

Climate Change and G20 Summit 2023:

Shahid was asked that the UAE is hosting COP28 in the ongoing year while the first day of G20 Summit 2023 was based on “Earth” which is related to Climate Change. So, What UAE is bring with itself to the summit? 

He said, there will be good news from this particularly from Climate Fund part which is the most difficult part. The G20 countries are coming up with national commitments to Climate Change. So, there will be substantive outcomes of the summit.

Inclusion of African Union in G20:

According to Indian reporter Bhairavi Singh, if European Union is part of the G20 then why not African Union could be made part of the bloc. She said, G20 is established to overcome macro-economic issue that majority of the world is concerned. So, the inclusion of Arican Union was the among the major concerns of G20.

As, African Union represents 25 African countries. Therefore, like the BRICS Summit, the leaders in G20 Summit 2023 will also voice the interest of Global South.
