In the changing dynamics of
international politics, Middle East is going through normalization of prolonged
tensions with a fast pace. After normalization of ties between Riyadh and
Tehran as well as Iranian President’s subsequent visit to Damascus, Arab
League announced today that it is going to re-admit Syria after twelve years of
suspension.
The League suspended membership of Syria back
in 2011 in the wake of civil war within its territory. The war erupted due to
crackdown of the street protesters who came out for Syria President Bashar
Al-Assad’s ouster.
Arab League it its foreign ministers
meeting adopted a resolution of its decision to readmit Syria as a member.
The decision was taken at a closed
meeting of foreign minister of members countries.
Some points of focus:
- According to the decision, Syria could resume its participation in the League’s meetings immediately.
- It also called for resolution of the crisis emanated from Civil war.
- The resolution of issues also includes the cross border smuggling and flight of refugees in the neighboring countries.
- The move supported by many Arab counties including Saudi Arabia and UAE while Qatar seemed adamant to push Syria to solve the crisis before re-inclusion.
- It was also decided in the meeting that secretaries from Egypt, Iraq, Jordan , Lebanon and Saudi Arabia will form a ministerial level group responsible for cooperation with Syrian government in seeking step by step moves to solve the crisis.
- Lastly, the group will also ensure to facilitate the proper delivery of aid in Syria.
