In the wake changing
global polarity, regional re-alignments are taking place. The major
breakthrough witness when China brokered talks between the arch rivals, Saudi
Arabia and Iran after which they have decided to refresh bilateral ties and open
embassies in respective capitals.
In a similar move,
Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi visited Syria. This was the first visit after
the war started in Syria in 2011. During the visit, he met his counterpart
President Bashar Al-Assad.
Raisi was
quoted by broadcaster Al-Madayan as saying that the visit aims consolidating ties
with Syria and other allies in the region, including Lebanese armed group
Hezbollah.
He also praised
Syria to resist American pressure and non-state elements.
In response,
Assad welcomed the Iranian president and acknowledged the recent development of
ties between Tehran and Riyadh.
Outcomes of the
Visit:
- A long-term Strategic Cooperation Agreement was signed.
- Both the countries signed MOUs on Oil Industry Cooperation
- Reaffirmation of commitments to stand by Sovereignty of each other
Response from
United States:
US seems not
happy with the move. The spokesperson in the State Department said that the
recent developments between Damascus and Tehran are very much concerning not
only US but also its allies and world at large.
Vedant Patel, who
is the spokesperson of US State Department, also told the media that we will
not support any effort to normalize ties with Syria.
