Qatar's Emir
Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani had a telephone conversation with Russian
President Vladimir Putin, two days after a rebel militia group emerged in
Russia.
According to
Qatar's state news agency QNA, the call focused on bilateral relations, as well
as the latest regional and international developments, including those within
the Russian Federation.
Qatar's Position on Dialogue and Ukraine's Sovereignty:
During the
call, Sheikh Tamim reiterated Qatar's stance of advocating for the resolution
of differences through dialogue and diplomatic means.
He emphasized
the importance of respecting Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity
within its internationally recognized borders, as reported by QNA.
Qatar's Neutral Stance on Russia-Ukraine Conflict:
Qatar, along
with several other Arab countries, has maintained a largely neutral position
regarding Russia's 16-month full-scale war on Ukraine.
The country's
foreign ministry expressed deep concern over the developments in Russia
following the armed uprising by the Wagner mercenary group.
He also cited
potential negative repercussions on international peace, security, and
essential supplies such as food and energy.
Mutual Interest in Strengthening Bilateral Ties:
According to
the Russian foreign ministry, both leaders affirmed their mutual interest in
further enhancing the bilateral ties between Qatar and Russia across various
sectors.
The ministry's
statement noted that the Qatari leader expressed support for the actions taken
by the Russian authorities regarding the events of June 24, referring to the
rebellion.
Accusations of Treason and Ongoing Investigation:
The rebel
leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, who heads the Wagner mercenary group, openly opposed
Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and initiated a march to Moscow, posing
a significant challenge to President Putin's authority.
Putin accused
Prigozhin of treason.
Russian media
reports indicate that Prigozhin remains under investigation by the Federal
Security Service (FSB) for his role in leading the rebellion.
