Due to its strategic importance and natural resources, “Everyone wanted a piece of Sudan” even before the war erupted, Declan Walsh quoted in the report.

The war has made the nations around very much conscious. Egypt hurriedly alarmed to bring back its soldiers seized by the warring factions. A Libyan military commander offered weapon to his preferred group, expressed by American officials.

Since the war had begun, Diplomats from around the world who resides in Khartoum, which has become a smoking battlefield, requesting the parties to halt war.

Russian private military company, Wagner, has publicly offered mediation between the fighting groups. American official has accused the same for offering weapons. Expressed Declan in a report.

The report further quotes the Wagner’s founder, Yevgeny Prigozhin, as saying,

The U.N. and many others want the blood of the Sudanese,”

The report further claimed that Mr. Prigozhin, “who is waging a brutal military campaign on behalf of Russia in Ukraine”, is also saying: “I want peace.”

Although, the war is recent but the changing dynamics of Sudanese politics and the imminence the conflict was obvious to many.

People expected a very bright and democratic future after the revolution of 2019 in Sudan that ousted autocratic regime of Omar al-Bashir but it also spelled new opportunities for few powerful nations to pursue their own interest there due to its strategic location on the River Nile and the Red Sea, richness in minerals, and agricultural strength.

Russia: it sought access to Sudan’s Red Sea Port for its warships and in response Wagner gave armoured vehicles and military training.

The United Arab Emirates: In the Yemen War, UAE paid for help to one the warring factions’ generals, Mohamed Hamdan.  Report says,

Egypt: Gen. Abdul Fattah al-Burhan was backed by Egypt. It also received soldiers and warplanes.

Israel: it got a chance to formally recognize Sudan to pursue its interest in the Middle East and Africa.

Western Nations: Invested in Sudan in its transition to democracy in order to contained Chinese and Russian influence in Africa.

Magdi el-Gizouli, who is the Sudanese analyst working at the Rift Valley Institute, a famous research group, expressed “Everyone wanted a chunk of Sudan and it couldn’t take all the meddling,” in addition with, “Too many competing interests and too many claims,”.

This meddling of Powers in Sudan has greatly undermined pro-democratic forces and helped the non-democratic groups which have been fighting now.

More than 400 people have died and 3,500 have been injured, in just the past week, according to the United Nations.
