Side-line meetings are being carried out during the ongoing Shanghai Cooperation Cooperation Organization (SCO) Defence Minister’s Gathering hosted by India this year. During such meeting, Indian and Russian high ranked officials agreed to strengthen their defense cooperation. Indian media quoted the statement of its government.

The talks chaired by Rajnath Singh from India and Sergei Shoigu from Russian side.  Both the parties appreciated the unique, long lasting and time-tested partnership.

They again reaffirmed their commitment towards strengthening bilateral relations and expressed confidence over the elements of mutual trust and mutual respect particularly in strategic matters.

India has remained the world’s largest client of Russian Arms and ammunition. It has bought tanks, nuclear submarines, fighter jets and aircraft carrier all the way from its inception.

However, Ukraine war has hindered the Indian defence imports from Moscow. It became critical for India to maintain its Russian made equipment under its use.

On the other hand, India carries Strategic-Partnership with US and some Western Countries. But, Indian government denied to publicly condemn Russian Invasion of Ukraine. In addition, It also has increased trade with Russia to record level which accounted largely the import of Russian energy products.

By this, India was criticised by various segments in the West including their leaders. This also has undermined their effort to isolate Russia. (Courtesy: Dawn and Reuters)
