Sultan Al-Najaf, who is the oil Chief in United Arab Emirates and also responsible to lead United Nations’ Climate Talks this year, urged the world community to take some serious efforts regarding Emission Capturing Technology instead of merely focusing on replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy.

Al-Najaf highlighted some points in his speech while holding an event of UAE’s Climate Tech that needs attention:

  • There are some fields where emissions are difficult to reduce, such as steel, cement and aluminum industries. So, the renewable energy cannot be only solution for this problem.
  • Major oil producers in Saudi Arabia and UAE are saying that carbon capturing, and storage are good options as a remedy for global warming.
  • Some scientists have responded that the option of emission capturing technology is not proven and expensive. So, hydrocarbons should not be replaced by this.
  • He was quoted as saying in the event that if we are serious about controlling carbon emissions, we should also get ready for carbon capture technologies.
  • According to him, in any untoward scenario, carbon capture technology will have role to play. Without this, the climate math just doesn’t add up.
  • He further adds that the crude remains the indispensable to the world economy while crucial to financing the energy transitions. So, there is great need to phase out carbon emissions.

The possible agenda issues for upcoming COP:

  • The debate between the carbon emission and reduction in fossil fuels will be taken as key concern in the coming COP28 getting started at Dubai in November 2023.
  •  UN’s climate expert panel (IPCC) alarmed that world temperature is risked at crossing 1.5 Celsius degrees in about a decade. It called for drastic reduction in carbon-heating emissions.
  • World’s major economies are taking broader steps in this regard. European Union has decided to ban the sale of fossil fuel cars from 2035 while planning to double renewable energy usage by 2030.
  • According to IPCC, the greenhouse gas emission from the existing situation has the capacity to cross world temperature from 1.5 Celsius degrees in the ongoing decade. So, the world needs to utilize emerging carbon-capturing and storage technologies despite of its costs.
  • Policymakers must ensure to provide incentives to the companies responsible for doing this job, including Direct Air Capture (DAC) and Carbon Capture Storage (CCS).
