In a surprising
move, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky attended Arab League Summit where
the stalemate was to extend a warm welcome to Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.
Zelensky has
started his international visits to urge international community for support
the cause of Ukraine against Russian aggression. He visited Europe from the
last two week. While after attending the Arab League he is schedule to attend
G-7 summit taking place in Japan.
The Saudi King
at his opening speech said that the kingdom reaffirms its commitment to continue
mediating between Russia and Ukraine and support all the efforts made by
international community to resolve crisis politically in order to ensure
regional peace.
Gulf states had
tried to remain neutral in the past regarding Ukraine’s war despite of the
pressure exerted by Western powers on Gulf oil producers to help isolate Russia,
a fellow OPEC+ Member.
Zelensky’s
Speech:
In his speech, Ukraine’s
President Zelensky said that there are some countries including Arab League members
preferred to “Turn a blind eye” on the Russian invasion of Ukrainian territory
and upon the prisoner detained in Russian Jails.
While
delivering a speech in English, he said “I am sure we can all be united in
saving people from Russian prisons.”
During the last
year, Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman managed to release ten prisoners from
the jail due to his close ties with Russian President.
Zelensky also
tweeted upon his arrival at Jeddah that The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia plays a
significant role, and we are ready to take our cooperation at new levels.
At the end,
Zelensky thanked Saudi Arabia for its help in the past and concluded by saying that the 10 point peace plan would reach to each delegate.
