ANKARA, Turkey (October 1, 2023) - The outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) has claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing in the Turkish capital of Ankara on Sunday, according to a news website close to the group.
The bombing, which occurred outside the Interior Ministry, killed the two attackers and injured two police officers.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the attack as a "cowardly act of terrorism" and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Why PKK Attacks?
The PKK is a Kurdish separatist group that has been fighting the Turkish government for decades. The group has been designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union.
The Ankara bombing is the latest in a series of attacks on Turkish soil by the PKK.
In November 2022, a bombing on a busy commercial street in Istanbul killed six people and injured dozens.
The PKK has accused the Turkish government of oppressing Kurds and denying their rights. The Turkish government has accused the PKK of carrying out terrorist attacks and destabilizing the country.
The
international community has condemned the Ankara bombing and called on all
sides to renounce violence and engage in dialogue.
