PARIS, April 23: Chinese Ambassador in Paris, Lu Shaye has commented on a question about the sovereign status of Ukraine whether it’s part of Russia or not, distressed France, Ukraine, and Baltic States. He said in an interview aired on French TV channel that historically, Ukraine is part of Russian and had offered by former Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev.

Lu Shaye was asked to clear his position about the sovereign status of former soviet countries including Ukraine, Baltic State of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

According to Shaye’s remarks, these ex-Soviet states does not entail the actual status in the eye of International Law because no international agreement found to actualize their sovereign status in this regard.

France responded on the following day and said its full solidarity with all the allied countries affected by Chinese ambassador’s statement. It further added that they got independence “after a decade of oppression”.

French spokesperson, continued on saying that Ukraine was internationally recognized country including Crimea from 1991, and China will have to clarify whether these comments reflect its position or not.

All the affected states reacted with their comments by following France.

Mykhailo Podolyak, who is the senior aide of Ukrainian President tweeted that "It is strange to hear an absurd version of the 'history of Crimea' from a representative of a country that is scrupulous about its thousand-year history,"

"If you want to be a major political player, do not parrot the propaganda of Russian outsiders."

However, Chinese Foreign Office has not commented on the issue so far, nor clarified the statement. (Courtesy: Reuters)
